Toy Design for Small Spaces

When considering small spaces, it is important to understand the impact that design can have on the space. Because of this I wanted to focus on the concept of transformation. Transforming the environment of play encapsulates the child in an atmosphere of learning, activity, and fun - all while incorporating and caring for the constructive and cognitive needs of the child.

I began exploring different ways to incorporate constructive and nature play in a way that also highlighted cognitive needs. I chose gears as a medium of play because of its hands-on nature that caters to both the constructive and cognitive needs I established. Ideation then evolved from there to incorporate the nature element to create a cohesive toy.

From there the concept of a gear board that projected moving visuals into the environment was created. Using the magical experience of a kaleidoscope and the cognitive and constructive traits of gear boards, I was able to bring the outside in through mechanics and light play, fully immersing the environment of play.

Multiple rounds of ideation were done to ensure that gear mechanics functioned correctly and that scale and fit were proper.

Illume is installed (with a parent or guardians assistance) in the window of a home using tension rods and C-hooks that are found on the back of the board. The board hooks over the tension rods and hangs in place securely for easy installation and removal. Tension rods were chosen because of their ability to accommodate a wide variety of window shapes and sizes.
